A new bio event made its debut in Berlin. Its name: bio:cap. The name combines "bio" from biotechnology and "cap" from capital — and that "capital" carries a double meaning. One is capital as in financial capital; the other is capital as in capital city. In other words, bio:cap is where biotechnology meets capital, and it embodies the ambition to reconnect Europe's life science ecosystem from Berlin, the capital of Germany.

A Professional Event for Industry Insiders — Substance Over Scale

bio:cap, held for the first time this year, had a noticeably different atmosphere from a typical trade fair. When people picture a large exhibition, they tend to imagine throngs of general visitors, sprawling exhibition halls, glossy brochures, and booth staff trying to flag down passersby. bio:cap was never aiming to be that kind of event. Rather than catering to the general public, it was designed as a professional gathering — a place where the right people from bio, healthcare, AI, investment, clinical, and pharma circles could find each other.

This focus turned out to be its greatest strength. bio:cap wasn't an event measured by visitor headcount; it was an event measured by who came, what conversations took place, and whether those conversations could realistically translate into PoCs (proof-of-concept), investment deals, clinical collaborations, or genuine European market validation. Foot traffic past a booth mattered less than landing a single meaningful conversation with the right investor, hospital representative, or pharma business development lead.

What was especially impressive was the structure of the event. Daytime hours were filled with conferences, pitches, partnering sessions, and investor meetings, while evenings flowed into exhibitor parties and networking events. Conversations that would have been hard to have in a formal meeting unfolded naturally over the evening sessions, and a quick first-day introduction often led to a follow-up booth visit or meeting room conversation the next day. Given how much trust matters in biotech — where multiple touchpoints typically outweigh a single pitch — this design was genuinely practical.

bio:cap may have launched in Berlin, but it was never meant to be a purely local affair. The event maintained ties to the Boston bio ecosystem, and a number of stakeholders from the U.S. bio scene were on the ground as well. Seeing Europe's research strength, Germany's clinical and manufacturing base, and America's investment and scale-up culture converge in one space offered a glimpse of how Berlin intends to grow its bio ecosystem going forward.

Berlin's Hidden Strength: Bio

Until now, Berlin's reputation has been firmly tied to fintech, SaaS, e-commerce, mobility, and AI startups. When people think of Germany's bio and pharma hubs, they more often mention Munich, Heidelberg, the Rhein-Neckar region, the Cologne-Düsseldorf area, or the southwestern German cluster connected to Basel, Switzerland. But over the past few years, Berlin has emerged as a new healthcare innovation hub, integrating clinical, research, and digital innovation infrastructure through institutions like Charité (Berlin Institute of Health at Charité), the Hasso Plattner Institute (founded by SAP co-founder Hasso Plattner), the Max Delbrück Center health cluster, and the Robert Koch Institute (Germany's equivalent of a national public health institute).

The name that best captures this momentum is HealthCapital Berlin-Brandenburg — both a regional brand and a network that ties Berlin and Brandenburg together as a single healthcare and life sciences cluster.

The region weaves biotech, pharma, medtech, digital health, hospitals, research institutes, investors, and public agencies into a tightly connected fabric. Berlin-Brandenburg is also home to global healthcare, pharma, and medtech players such as Bayer, B. Braun, Berlin-Chemie, Biotronik, Eckert & Ziegler, Pfizer, Sanofi, Takeda, and Thermo Fisher Scientific.

The presence of these names matters. It's evidence that Berlin isn't simply a freewheeling city for founders, but is growing into a genuine biohealth cluster equipped with real industrial partners, clinical and research infrastructure, and global corporate networks. For bio and healthcare startups, breaking into Europe isn't merely a matter of setting up a local entity or showing up at a trade fair. They must earn hospital validation, clear regulatory thresholds, partner with pharma or medical device firms, and convince investors of long-term growth potential. From that vantage point, the HealthCapital ecosystem in Berlin-Brandenburg can be a particularly compelling point of entry for Korean startups.

Five Companies Taking on the Global Stage

This year's bio:cap also featured a contingent of Korean bio and healthcare startups: MEDIAIPLUS, MEDIHUB, Ainex Corporation, NineBioWare, and Microt. Their technologies span very different areas, but their common thread was unmistakable — all aiming to connect medical and healthcare technologies developed in Korea with Europe's clinical, investment, pharma, and medical device ecosystems.

MEDIAIPLUS develops an AI-powered platform that supports clinical trial preparation, CRO selection, and clinical data analysis. For biotech ventures and pharmaceutical companies pursuing new drug development, some of the hardest tasks are formulating the right clinical trial strategy, mapping the competitive trial landscape, and identifying trustworthy CROs and institutions. MEDIAIPLUS aims to streamline these processes through data and AI. This need is especially acute in Europe, where the complexity of country-specific healthcare systems, regulations, and clinical institution structures heightens the demand for data-driven decision-making during trial preparation. On the ground, MEDIAIPLUS drew strong interest in conversations with pharmaceutical companies like Bayer and Novo Nordisk, as well as CROs and biotech players, by articulating a clear thesis around clinical development efficiency.

MEDIHUB is a smart injection and drug delivery medical device company focused on reducing patient pain and improving usability for clinicians. With medical devices, technology alone isn't enough — what matters is whether the device is genuinely easy to use in clinical settings, whether it integrates into existing workflows without friction, and how much it improves the patient experience. MEDIHUB's solutions are built precisely around these factors. Given that medical device certification, distribution partners, and in-hospital usability validation are critical in the European market, MEDIHUB used the event to explore connections with medtech investors, distribution partners, and clinical networks. Its ability to speak to both patient-centered care and clinician efficiency drew positive responses on the floor. Notably, Novo Nordisk — well-known for its diabetes and obesity therapies — showed enough interest to visit the booth on two consecutive days.

Ainex Corporation develops real-time AI-powered diagnostic support solutions for gastrointestinal endoscopy. Endoscopy is already a widely used examination method in hospitals worldwide, but the quality of results can vary depending on a clinician's experience and level of concentration during interpretation. Ainex Corporation uses AI to detect abnormal areas in real time during upper and lower GI endoscopy procedures and to assist clinical decision-making. In Europe, for medical AI to actually enter hospital workflows, clinical evidence, data protection, medical device regulations, and integration with existing equipment all matter. bio:cap gave Ainex Corporation a stage to discuss these considerations directly with European hospitals, investors, and medical device ecosystem stakeholders. On the ground, the company unexpectedly connected with Vivantes Clinic — one of Germany's largest hospital chains — and even had the opportunity to visit a Berlin-based hospital to demonstrate its solution to clinicians in person.

NineBioWare is developing ultra-sensitive, blood-based diagnostic technology aimed at the early detection of neurodegenerative diseases. Neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's are among the most pressing medical and social challenges in a rapidly aging Europe. If early diagnosis becomes feasible, it could create meaningful change across multiple fronts — from the timing of therapeutic intervention to patient management to the selection of clinical trial candidates. NineBioWare is still in its early stages, which is precisely why events like bio:cap, where it can meet investors, research institutions, and pharma early innovation teams, are so important. Beyond the technology itself, key questions include which disease targets to prioritize, which clinical partners to validate with, and how to build the evidence base in Europe — and on-site conversations helped sharpen these directions. Notably, the neurology department at Charité took a close interest in NineBioWare's solution during their visit.

Microt Inc. is a medical device company in the field of MIGS (Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery) — minimally invasive ophthalmic implants for treating glaucoma. Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness worldwide, and treatment demand is rising alongside aging populations. Existing treatment approaches have limitations in terms of medication adherence, surgical burden, and long-term management. Microt offers a solution designed to broaden access to glaucoma treatment with lower overall burden. In the European market, success hinges on ophthalmologist networks, clinical data, CE certification strategy, and securing distribution partners. At bio:cap, Microt leveraged its clear specialization in ophthalmic medical devices to drive substantive conversations with medtech investors and prospective clinical partners. The opportunity to meet directly with European investors was a strong first step toward business expansion.

The significance of Korean companies' participation in bio:cap goes beyond the simple fact that "Korean startups attended a European event." What mattered was that they were trying to articulate their technologies in language that would translate into European market validation. Even teams used to explaining their product's technical merits or hospital adoption potential in Korea find that the questions shift in Europe. What clinical evidence do you have in Europe? How will you address medical device regulations? How is your data privacy and medical data governance structured? What business models are viable within reimbursement frameworks or hospital procurement structures? If you were to run a PoC, in which hospital, with which patient cohort, and against which endpoints would you validate it?

bio:cap was a venue where these questions were unavoidable — and that was precisely its value for Korean startups. The most common failure mode of overseas exhibitions is "broad exposure, nothing to show for it." But at a highly specialized event like bio:cap, depth-of-conversation with a small group of decision-makers can yield more than mass outreach. The Korean companies on the ground engaged with investors, hospitals, pharma firms, and research institutions to crystallize their next steps for European entry. In particular, the approach of pursuing PoC opportunities and investment in parallel is a remarkably pragmatic strategy for European market entry.

The European bio and healthcare market is rich in opportunity, but its barriers to entry are correspondingly high. Medical devices require CE certification and clinical evaluation; digital health and medical AI demand data protection, algorithmic validation, and hospital adoption pathways; bio diagnostics and clinical trial platforms require trust built across pharma, CROs, hospitals, and research institutions. For Korean companies, technological capability alone isn't enough — local partners, clinical evidence, regulatory strategy, and a compelling narrative for investors all need to be in place.

In this respect, bio:cap served as a meaningful testbed for Korean startups. Berlin may not yet qualify as Germany's largest traditional bio production cluster in the conventional sense. But when it comes to connecting AI, digital health, clinical research, policy, and investment networks, it holds extraordinary potential. The combination is unique to Berlin: robust hospital infrastructure, the translational medicine perspective of the Berlin Institute of Health, the digital expertise of the Hasso Plattner Institute, and the industry-research-policy network anchored by HealthCapital. With global pharma companies, U.S. and European bio investors, and German business media converging on the event, bio:cap demonstrated the potential to grow beyond a fledgling debut into a vital networking platform within Europe's future bio ecosystem.
